FRESHLY PEMBROKESHIRE SUPPER CLUB

Posted in: Events, OtherTransition- Oct 29, 2011 No Comments

Transition Haverfordwest

Hi

We’d love you to join us at the new FRESHLY PEMBROKESHIRE SUPPER CLUB on 11 November…

The first Freshly Pembrokeshire Supper Club held on 14 October was a great success. The Picton Centre was transformed into an atmospheric bistro-style restaurant which set the scene for the evening. It was good to see so many of the Farmers Market stallholders enjoying a social evening, tucking into their own delicious produce and meeting others from the local community.

Many thanks to Robbie and Freddie from Spring Gardens catering for serving up such a mouth-watering menu. The Spanish lamb meatballs made from local lamb, and the vegetarian curry showed off local produce at its best.

Several bookings have already been made for the next supper club on 11 November so get your order in early to be sure of a place. Please book by Wednesday 9 November at the latest, giving the names and food orders of all the people in your party. The food is bought and cooked to order to ensure there is absolutely no waste.

About the chefs…

Robbie Coles and Freddie (Frederica) Riley who have agreed to put their combined catering expertise into the Freshly Pembrokeshire Supper Club, have been working together since 1983. Freddie married Robbie for his pastry and they moved to Pembrokeshire in 1987. They have been catering using largely local and/or fair trade produce ever since.

Their involvement in the Supper Club is partly to support the local food economy, partly to offer food producers and the public an enjoyable and informal way to share a meal and each other’s company, and partly as a showcase for their business, Spring Gardens Catering.

Here’s the menu for the next supper club date…

What happens when the oil runs out

FILM COMPETITION

“What happens when the oil runs out”

Transition Town Llandeilo is proposing to run a film-making competition open to young people of Carmarthenshire:- 15 to 18 year olds and 18 to 21 year olds

The project will be to produce a 10 to 15 minute film setting out the problem –what happens when the oil runs out – and a potential solution. To identify an issue that affects the competitor’s life and to imagine that this catastrophe will occur next week, or next year, so that an immediate solution with technology available today is needed.

We need:

a. Sponsorship for cameras, prize etc.
b. Production guidance – from a professional film-maker
c. Judging panel – at least one “name”.
d. Co-operation of schools and colleges.
e. Advertising

The process will be to :

Obtain sponsorship and assemble the judging panel. This will enable competition rules to be formulated.

Then to advertise the competition directly via a presentation in schools and colleges in the county and advertise more widely.

Tim Pullen is co-ordinating this project but cannot see it through to completion alone. We are looking for a few interested people to tackle all the work necessary. If you would like to be involved and are prepared to take on some of this work call Tim Pullen – 01269 822375 – or email timr.pullen@btinternet.com.

New Economics Group meetings resuming soon

At this week’s general meeting, it was decided to continue the meetings of this group.  As the global economy continues its implosion, it is more important than ever to understand the failures of the current system and consider alternative approaches to production, distribution and exchange that will better enable us to meet social needs.

Posted in: OtherTransition- Oct 04, 2011 No Comments
A public meeting takes place tomorrow, Wednesday October 5, in Llandeilo to debate the issues around Sainsbury’s application to open a store in Llandeilo.  The meeting is at the Civic Hall at 7.30 pm and has been called by the Town Council.  There will be presentations by Sainsbury’s themselves, and by the opposition group ‘Save Llandeilo’s Future’.  The meeting is expected to end with an open question and answer session.
Please come and contribute to this important debate.

In my email yesterday about tonight’s meeting about  Sainsbury’s I said – “the meeting will probably end with a question and answer from the floor“.
I must correct that statement.  In fact, while the last 30 minutes of the meeting will be opened to the audience to make their points of view,  these views will not be accepted as questions to either Save Llandeilo’s Future, Sainsbury’s or the Town Council.
Apologies for passing on erroneous information which I believed to be genuine.

Online seminars to introduce the Earth Charter

Posted in: Store- Sep 07, 2011 No Comments

The Earth Charter International Secretariat (ECI) will be offering four one and a half hour online seminars to introduce the Earth Charter to new initiative participants, volunteers, and any other interested parties. The seminars will take place once a week every week in September and will cover several Earth Charter basic topics.

The seminar will introduce the Earth Charter document, explain its origins, the process in which it was drafted, its significance in international sustainable development policy and practice, and will offer some examples of its relevance and use in ongoing sustainability and peace efforts. The seminar will expand on the importance of value systems and the ethical framework that the Earth Charter offers for promoting peace, sustainability, and justice and will engage attendees in an informal exercise. Finally, the seminar will offer several suggestions for attendees who want to get involved or learn more about the Earth Charter. The seminars will end with a question, answer, and discussion forum.

ECI hopes that both Earth Charter novices and veterans will attend to learn and share about the Earth Charter Initiative and be inspired to take action to make the world a more just, peaceful, and sustainable place.
